A Firefighter's Perspective on Post-Fire Fighting – NBC Los Angeles

Firefighters continue to battle the Post Fire in the Gorman area, which is affecting Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

The fire has burned approximately 15,690 acres and was approximately 83% contained as of Sunday.

Evacuation orders remain in effect for residents near Gorman west of Highway 5 near Pyramid Lake.

This weekend's hot weather created difficult conditions for firefighters who continue to work to extinguish the blaze.

“Not only are they fighting in the field and carrying 30 to 40 pounds of equipment, but they are also dealing with a tremendous amount of heat. Not only because of the weather conditions, but also because of the fire itself,” said Los Angeles County Fire Captain Marco Rodriguez.

With Post Fire, Rodriguez said they started with about 400 people responding to the site, then grew to more than 1,700 people.

He said the terrain was so uneven that it was difficult for teams to make their way through the hills.

To make things easier, they got on a boat and went to the fire, Rodriguez said.

“We know that in recent years we've had heavy rains, and with heavy rains, brush growth is going to increase,” Rodriguez said. “We will try to mitigate these issues through rapid response and increased staffing.
