A Christian attacked during the collective violence in Sargodha for alleged blasphemy has died

SARGODHA: A Christian man who became the target of an angry mob in Punjab's Sargodha district for alleged blasphemy succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning, police officials said.

According to regional police officer (RPO) spokesperson Sharik Kamal Siddiqui, Nazir Masih was treated at CMH Hospital in Rawalpindi for nine days.

Masih also underwent two surgeries, but could not survive the head injuries, the spokesperson said. His autopsy has been carried out and he will be buried later today.

According to the report, Masih died from serious head injuries, hospital sources said.

The incident took place on May 25 in Sargodha after an angry mob tortured Masih for alleged blasphemy.

The situation turned violent when angry people attacked the victim's house in the Mujahid settlement area, damaging his property and setting fire to a shoe factory established there. They also burned tires and damaged electrical installations in the area.

Following the incident, at least 25 people were arrested by police who also shifted the victim and her family to an undisclosed location after rescuing them.

Sargodha Division Commissioner Muhammad Ajmal Bhatti promised that those involved in the incident would be brought to justice after conducting a transparent investigation into the incident.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) also expressed concerns over the situation in Sargodha and urged the Punjab Police and the district administration to immediately bring the perpetrators to justice.
