A brush fire was reported near Interstate 5 near North Game Farm Road

Eugene Springfield firefighters are battling a brush fire first observed near a homeless encampment on North Game Farm Road.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 5:35 p.m. after receiving reports of smoke and flames in the area, according to a statement from the fire department. When they arrived, they were confronted with a half-acre fire caused by wind.

The Coburg Fire District is assisting with the operation. Authorities have advised motorists to avoid the area during the operation.

It was the second major brush fire local crews had faced in less than 24 hours, with a similar-sized blaze breaking out just after midnight atop Skinner Butte. Fireworks were likely the cause.

The Oregon Department of Forestry officially declared fire season this week in the Western Lane District, meaning the manufacture, sale or use of fireworks in unincorporated areas of Lane County is now prohibited for the Fourth of July weekend.

Most fireworks are banned in Eugene, with a fine of up to $500 imposed on those convicted of buying, selling or setting off fireworks within city limits.

Fears of wildfires in the region are increasing as temperatures rise this week, with dry conditions and a heat wave in sight. Temperatures are expected to approach triple digits by Friday and climb as high as 105 degrees in the Eugene area, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.

The changing conditions could upend what has so far been a quiet wildfire season in western Oregon.
