A brother denounces the lack of research efforts

(NewsNation) — Oliver Calibet, whose brother Albert Calibet, a retired Los Angeles sheriff's deputy, has been missing for more than a week on the Greek island of Amorgos, expressed frustration over the lack of assistance from authorities in search efforts.

“I don't see anything,” Oliver Calibet told NewsNation's “Elizabeth Vargas Reports” on Monday, contradicting claims by the U.S. Embassy in Greece that extensive search operations involving helicopters and dogs were underway. “I had to get a lawyer today so I could get a permit so the dogs could come sniff.”

The missing retired lawmaker is one of several foreigners, including Americans, who died or disappeared under mysterious circumstances on Greek islands last week. Although some cases may be linked to the extreme heat, authorities are investigating possible criminal aspects.

Albert Calibet, 58, disappeared last Tuesday while hiking on Amorgos, a 49-square-mile island he had visited regularly for a decade. Although he was an experienced outdoorsman, no trace of him was found and his belongings were also missing.

“It’s not that big an island. And I don't know where he is. And I just want him back,” Oliver Calibet said. “In order for me to request the raw cell tower data, I had to sign a statement saying I believe a crime was committed.”

As the search continues, Oliver Calibet wonders about the lack of help from the American authorities: “Why isn't the United States helping me? For what? I understand it's another country. But the United States should help me. This is what embassies are for, to help us, citizens. I don't get any help. And I don't speak Greek.

A missing American tourist has died on a beach on a small Greek island west of Corfu, local media reported.

The man's body was found on a fairly isolated rocky beach on the island of Mathraki on Sunday by another tourist. He was reported missing Thursday by his host, a Greek-American friend. The tourist was last seen on Tuesday in a cafe with two female tourists who have since left the island.

A 74-year-old Dutch tourist was found on Saturday by a fire brigade drone, lying face down in a ravine about 300 meters from where he was last seen last Sunday, walking with some difficulty in the heat torrid.

Dr Michael Mosley, a famous British television presenter and author, was found dead last Sunday on the island of Symi. A coroner concluded he died the previous Wednesday, shortly after hiking over difficult and rocky terrain.

On Friday, two French tourists were reported missing from Sikinos, a relatively isolated Cycladic island in the Aegean Sea with fewer than 400 permanent residents. The two women, aged 64 and 73, had left their respective hotels to meet up.

“For people here, it’s a mystery,” Oliver Calibet said.
