A baby fighting for his life after being severely beaten; teenage parents arrested

The child is listed as being in critical condition.

HOUMA, La. — A 6-week-old baby is fighting for his life after being brutally beaten, Houma police said Thursday morning.

Police say officers were called to a hospital in the Houma area after receiving reports of suspected child abuse involving the baby.

Police said the baby suffered head and rib trauma and had to be airlifted from the hospital to a specialized medical center. The child is listed as being in critical condition.

Police said an investigation showed the parents — an unidentified 16-year-old man and Jemi Kenny, 18 — were responsible for the life-threatening injuries at some point in the past 10 days. Both suspects were taken into custody and charged with attempted second-degree murder.

Police said the child's long-term prognosis was uncertain.
