A 16-year-old autistic boy in Florida was found safe a day later.

BUSHNELL, Fla. — A Sumter County teenager with autism was found safe Tuesday evening after being missing for nearly 24 hours.

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office said Peyton Pickard, 16, was neck-deep in water on the banks of the Withlacoochee River, less than a mile from his home in Bushnell.

He was reported missing from his home near County Road 575 and State Road 48 around 9 p.m. Monday.

“The officers said when they found him, he was just sitting there in a hunched position with his arms around his neck because he was in the water up to his neck,” said Deputy -Sheriff Pat Breeden of the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.

Deputy Mata and a bloodhound named Indy found the teen.

“We haven't given up hope, but we still have concerns because of the weather and the terrain,” Undersheriff Breeden said.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Sumter County Sheriff's Office and the Citrus County Sheriff's Office, spent Monday evening and Tuesday searching for Pickard. The teenager is non-verbal and autistic.

Nearly 100 volunteers showed up to help law enforcement with the search.

“I'm thrilled. I'm happy. We didn't go looking, but we couldn't be more thrilled that we don't have to,” said Desiree Paradise who lives in Orlando.

“I have sons and I hope someone does the same for me, but I also have a heart for people,” Jacqueline Adams said.

Authorities said the teen was found dehydrated, suffering from insect bites and scratches.

He was taken to hospital for evaluation.

“It makes me happy because a young man is back with his father tonight. He is safe and by God's will the outcome is great,” said Undersheriff Breeden.
