9 people injured in Michigan wading pool shooting

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI – An active shooter who opened fire at a Rochester Hills splash pad Saturday afternoon injured nine people, including at least two children, police said in the latest update.

Authorities said law enforcement followed a suspect to a home, where the person killed himself, according to the Associated Press.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard previously reported that up to 10 people were injured by an active shooter around 5 p.m. at the Brooklands Splash Pad in Rochester Hills, 1585 E. Auburn Road, about 30 miles north from Detroit.

Bouchard said the shooting appeared to be “random.” Detectives found 28 shell casings at the scene where the sheriff said the shooter got out of his vehicle at the splash zone and opened fire with a nine-millimeter Glock handgun, possibly reloading twice .

A sheriff's deputy was on scene two minutes after the 911 call, made at 5:11 p.m. Police said the shooter had no known connection to the victims, who were taken to four area hospitals. The revised injury figures came after hospital checks.

At a press conference Saturday evening, Bouchard provided information about the children who were shot. According to the AP, he said an 8-year-old boy was shot in the head and was in critical condition, his 4-year-old brother was shot in the leg and in stable condition, and that their mother was in critical condition after being injured. in the abdomen and leg.

The AP reported that the six other victims, all aged 30 or older, were in stable condition, including a husband and wife couple and a 78-year-old man.

Bouchard said the first deputies who arrived immediately began providing first aid, including applying tourniquets. The suspect did not reside in Rochester Hills, and Bouchard said investigators did not know why he went to the splash pad.

The suspect is reportedly being held at a residence in Shelby Township. A search warrant was being obtained to enter the home, where the Sheriff's Office SWAT team had already responded. Officers tried unsuccessfully to make contact with the suspect inside, Bouchard said.

After deploying a drone, they eventually entered the home and found the suspect dead, the AP reported.
