9 injured, including 2 children, during a shooting in the Detroit area; suspect dead

Nine people were injured, including two young children, after a suspect opened fire at a wading pool in Rochester Hills, Michigan, Saturday evening, officials said.

Rochester Hills is about 30 minutes north of Detroit.

The suspect allegedly went to the fountain shortly after 5 p.m. and fired more than 20 shots before leaving the area.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said the injured ranged in age from 4 to 78, some of whom were from the same family.

Two of the victims are said to be in critical condition, an 8-year-old man and a 39-year-old man. The others would be stable Saturday evening.

Initially, authorities thought there could be up to 10 victims, but that figure was lowered Saturday evening.

“It’s heartbreaking…my thoughts are with the families at this time,” said Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan K. Barnett.

Bouchard said law enforcement was able to track the suspect to a residence in neighboring Shelby Township. SWAT attempted to make contact but later learned the suspected shooter was deceased. The suspected shooter committed suicide, authorities said.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she is in contact with local officials and monitoring updates as they come in.
