Police said the child was leaving their residence and going to the home of a neighbor who lived nearby when he was struck by gunfire.

Responding officers performed life-saving measures on the child before he was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

There is currently no one in custody. Snelling said police were canvassing the area in an attempt to find more information about the shooter.

The child was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, authorities said.
