69-year-old woman killed by car during attempted armed robbery at Fashion Island in Newport Beach

Top line:

A 69-year-old woman was killed when she was struck by a car during a robbery at Fashion Island Mall, the Newport Beach Police Department confirmed Tuesday night.

What we know: Two people were standing outside the Barnes & Noble store when two men approached them and tried to rob them, authorities said. A fight broke out and one of the men eventually fled, firing a few shots from a handgun.

Police believe the woman was dragged into the street during the fight, where she was hit by a car driven by one of the men allegedly involved in the incident.

A third man also got into the vehicle and fled the scene, authorities said, but all were arrested in Cypress and Los Angeles County.

No one was injured in the shooting, and it's unclear how many shots were fired. The other person with the woman was not injured, and Newport Beach police said there is no threat to the community.

Previous updates: According to CBS, firefighters said the shooting happened around 3:30 p.m.

A Barnes and Noble bookseller confirmed to LAist that they have closed the store.

Naomi Wright, one of the managers of True Food Kitchen, said the restaurant was temporarily closed because most of its staff and customers had left when they heard the gunshots. She confirmed that the scene was mostly confined to the parking lot, which was cordoned off by police, SWAT teams and fire trucks.

Background story of the shopping center: Fashion Island is a popular outdoor shopping mall in Newport Beach. It is home to many department stores. This is not the first time a shooting has occurred at Fashion Island.
