62-year-old woman charged with repeatedly stabbing and killing pregnant teenager

A 62-year-old woman was arrested Monday and charged with stabbing a pregnant teenager five months ago, just days before the girl was due to give birth.

Jacqueline Reid, 62, has been charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Maylashia Hogg, 17, and her unborn child, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said. Hogg was nine months pregnant with the daughter she planned to name Londyn Charity when she was found dead in February, just blocks from her Barnwell home.

Hogg was last seen on February 8 and was reported missing by her family on February 14 after missing her induction appointment, according to reports from FOX affiliate WACH.

“She was thrilled to be a mom,” Hogg’s cousin Robert Payne told the outlet. He added that Hogg would name his daughter after her mother, who died in 2022.

Kimberly Kite, founder of the Broken Link Foundation, an advocacy group that helps search for missing people, told ABC affiliate WPDE after Hogg's disappearance that her family had not received any help from authorities in getting the word out.

“When a family reports a loved one missing, the police need to listen to the family,” Kite told WACH.

Authorities searched Reid's home, where they found unspecified “forensic evidence” of the crime, according to an arrest warrant attached to the SLED announcement. The warrant said Hogg had been stabbed multiple times with a “sharp weapon.”

Michael Sapp, Hogg's stepfather, told ABC affiliate WJBF after Reid's court appearance this week that she was known to the family and he “just couldn't believe she actually did this.”

“I asked her several times if she had seen Malaysia. She looked me straight in the eye and said no. And she knew all along that she had already done this to my baby,” Sapp told the outlet.

According to WJBF, Reid refused to speak to the judge during the hearing and was denied bail. Hogg's family continues to demand answers as authorities have yet to determine a motive for Hogg's murder.

Ja'Nearia Rice, Hogg's cousin, told USA TODAY that Reid had spent time with the family in the days leading up to his arrest, adding that she once lived across the street from Hogg.

“Why would you do something like that and then come see the family?” Rice told the outlet. “She came the day Maylashia was found. She came to Maylashia’s yard, sat with the family, watched them cry in pain.”
