53 people arrested, including 9 minors, hours after Chicago pride march – NBC Chicago

More than four dozen people have been arrested and several face criminal charges following a chaotic scene and “mass arrests” in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood overnight Sunday.

The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. Monday in the 3000 block of North Clark Street, police said, about 12 hours after the Chicago Pride march ended. A total of 53 people, including nine juveniles, were taken into custody, police said.

Police say 14 of those arrested are charged with crimes ranging from aggravated assault and battery against a transit worker to aggravated assault and battery against a police officer, among others.

Police said 24 of those arrested have been charged with various offences including reckless driving, battery, assault and criminal damage to property.

Police say charges are pending against 12 other people.

In addition, four firearms were seized at the scene, police added.

“Our officers, who exercised great restraint and patience, recovered four firearms while responding to this crowd,” the CPD said on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

Photos and videos posted on social media showed dozens of police officers on the streets and on bicycles, and fights sometimes broke out.

According to court documents, some of the accused adults appeared in court Monday for detention hearings. Court documents show one of the accused adults was seen riding a scooter down the street, brandishing a firearm while carrying an open bottle of alcohol.

According to Chicago police, at least one detention hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.

The chaos comes as the city and the Chicago Police Department prepare for next month's Democratic National Convention, which is expected to draw massive crowds of protesters.
