52nd Street shooting: Deadly shooting that claimed William Shirley's life was caught on surveillance video in West Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — After a violent shooting left one person dead in West Philadelphia over the weekend, police are hoping new surveillance video can help them locate the shooter.

On Monday, authorities identified the victim as William Shirley, 23.

New surveillance video released by investigators shows the moments before the unsuspecting victim was shot.

Man shot dead after West Philadelphia shooting

“It wasn't a single shot, it was a shooting,” said Donnie Olivieri of West Philadelphia. “I feel sorry for his family.”

Police said the suspect used an assault rifle in the attack outside a corner store on 52nd Street late Saturday night.

Moments before Shirley was shot, he was seen standing on the sidewalk. Seconds later, a dark-colored mid-size SUV pulled up and the shooter got out.

The suspect was wearing a black hoodie and a face mask when he fired multiple rounds at close range, police said.

Homicide investigators believe the victim was specifically targeted.

“I was at the top of the stairs and I heard a lot of gunshots,” Andrew Brooks said.

Brooks said there are frequent incidents along 52nd Street, but this shooting was particularly brazen.

As people dispersed, the victim was left on the sidewalk, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Philadelphia police said he was rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

“It’s sad, it’s really sad,” Brooks said. “Philadelphia is a good place, people just need to show more love and compassion for each other and for life in general.”

The motive for the shooting is still unknown. Investigators are still searching for the shooter.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police.
