5 Things to Do and See for Sports Fans in and near RI This Summer

The sun shines after 7 p.m. and temperatures have started to reach 70 degrees.

That can only mean one thing in Rhode Island: summer is just around the corner.

The nature of our weather tells us that this will happen in an instant. Our sports calendar will be full of options before the kids go back to school in September. There are a few over the next few months that might prove to be a little extra special.

We've limited this list to five, but you can always find more. College baseball talent will be on display with the Newport Gulls and Ocean State Waves teams. Golf, tennis, sailing, a lively nightly volleyball game at Gator's Pub in North Smithfield: these are all potential entertainment venues for the right crowd.

This is more than enough in terms of introduction. Let's talk about serious things.

International polo grounds, June-September

It's a return to the golden age on Aquidneck Island. You might imagine a scene like this in the late 19th century in nearby Newport: athletes on horseback competing, surrounding crowds lounging in the sun and sipping champagne.
