5 people shot dead near Las Vegas, suspect arrested, police say

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A man who fatally shot five people and seriously injured a 13-year-old girl in apartments near Las Vegas committed suicide, authorities said Tuesday.

The North Las Vegas Police Department said the suspected shooter, Eric Adams, 47, killed himself Tuesday morning while being confronted by officers in a neighborhood. Authorities had been searching for him since Monday night's shootings at separate apartments.

Efforts to locate Adams' relatives for comment were not immediately successful.

Police said they initially found two women dead while investigating reports of a shooting Monday night at a North Las Vegas apartment. One of them was in her early 40s and the other was in her late 50s, according to the department.

As officers investigated, the department said, they learned that a teenage girl had been taken to the hospital with serious gunshot wounds and that there may be other victims in a nearby apartment.

Officers then found the bodies of two women in their 20s and a man in his early 20s. All five victims were shot, police said. They were not immediately identified.

The discovery led to a nighttime search for Adams, who authorities had described as “armed and dangerous.”

Shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday, police learned the suspect had been seen at a business in North Las Vegas.

When police arrived on scene, they saw the suspect armed with a firearm, running in the backyard of a neighboring house. The police followed him, but the suspect refused to drop his weapon and committed suicide.

Police have not released a motive for the shooting, which they called an “isolated incident.” A police department spokesperson did not respond to phone and email requests Tuesday for more information.
