5 New Jersey fire departments battle 4-alarm restaurant fire

SOMERVILLE, NJ — Smoke billowed from a building at West Main and North Bridge streets in Somerville Tuesday afternoon after a fire. apparently busted in a restaurant.

The fire appears to have originated from the King Tut restaurant, located at 6 Main Street, as multiple alarms were sounded to respond to the fire around 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Fire departments from Hillsborough Township, Country Hills, Martinsville and Finderne could be seen responding to the fire as smoke billowed, primarily from the rear of the building.

The Somerville Police Department issued a warning asking the public to stay away from the area of ​​West Main Street at 3:28 p.m. due to an “active fire investigation.”

The Main Street and North Bridge Street area of ​​Somerville is a bustling downtown area with restaurants, cafes, and other local businesses. Last weekend again, the region was the scene of Somerville Tourthe largest professional bicycle race in the state.

Somerville police declined to answer questions about the fire Tuesday afternoon and referred questions to the Somerset County District Attorney's Office, which local police said was leading the investigation.

Officials with the prosecutor's office did not immediately respond to questions about the incident Tuesday afternoon. The extent of the damage and evacuations was unknown Tuesday. A spokesperson for the New Jersey Area Red Cross did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A phone number listed for the King Tut restaurant was not accepting messages Tuesday evening and the phone number for an adjacent restaurant was disconnected.
