49ers guarantee Kyle Shanahan will have his favorite weapon for the next four years with Christian McCaffrey deal

After skipping OTAs, Christian McCaffrey reported to the San Francisco 49ers' mandatory minicamp on Tuesday.

We quickly understood why.

The 49ers, according to multiple reports, signed McCaffrey to a two-year contract extension worth $19 million per year. Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk was first to report the deal.

McCaffrey was scheduled to enter unrestricted free agency in 2026 and earn $24.2 million over the next two years.

Instead, the extension ensures he will remain a member of the 49ers roster through the 2027 season, with his extension meaning he is now essentially locked into a four-year contract worth $62.2 million of dollars, worth $15.55 million per year.

McCaffrrey's new deal is the reward for a standout 2023 season, for which he was named Offensive Player of the Year.

The former eighth overall pick of the Carolina Panthers won the rushing title with 1,459 yards and also led the league in yards from scrimmage (2,023). He was the only player to surpass 2,000 yards from scrimmage during the 2023 season and also finished tied for the league lead in total touchdowns, his total of 21 matched by former running back 49ers Raheem Mostert.

Although he failed to become the first running back to win the MVP award since Adrian Peterson in 2012, McCaffrey was awarded Offensive Player of the Year the week of Super Bowl 58, during which he accumulated 160 yards and a touchdown for the 49ers. 'Overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Now, with his contract more accurately reflecting his extraordinary value to San Francisco's offense, McCaffrey can focus on his preparations for a 2024 season that the 49ers hope will finally bring them ultimate glory after their agony in Las Vegas in February .
