4 suspects arrested for fatally stabbing 16-year-old in Herriman

HERRIMAN, Utah — A teenager was stabbed to death Wednesday afternoon in a Herriman neighborhood.

The incident occurred in the area of Solo Street and Beckenbauer Avenue, located near Zions Bank Stadium and the Real Salt Lake Training Academy.

Herriman police said they received a call around 12:30 p.m. about a fight with a weapon involved. When they arrived, they found a 16-year-old boy sitting in the driver's seat of a vehicle suffering from a stab wound to the chest. First responders attempted lifesaving measures, but the teen died at the scene.

Police are investigating the incident as a homicide. They aren't sure what led up to the stabbing, but said there was some sort of altercation. The fight reportedly took place in the street and the victim found himself in the vehicle at one point. Authorities said the victim did not live in the area.

As the investigation progressed, police said they identified four suspects involved in the incident. Two of them were admitted to hospital. The other two were apprehended after a SWAT team was dispatched to a Riverton home, where they surrounded the residence and called for those inside to come out. They brought in the SWAT team “because of the nature of what we were dealing with and some of the backgrounds of the people involved,” said Deputy Chief Cody Stromberg of the Herriman Police Department.

The four suspects included two women, a man and a boy. They were all detained. Police have not yet identified the suspect who stabbed the victim, but authorities said all four were involved in the fight. They added that the suspects and the victim had a history and this was not a random attack.

“It's tragic any time someone dies in this way, regardless of the circumstances, it's a tragedy for the people involved. So we will do our best to make sure we do a thorough investigation, respond to all questions and to answer all questions “If there is accountability, make sure we hold these people accountable,” Stromberg said.

So far, Stromberg says no arrests have been made.

“Our investigators are actively talking with them, which is why we are currently labeling them as persons of interest,” Stromberg said.

There was a Valley High School graduation ceremony nearby at RSL Academy. Stromberg initially said the incident was unrelated; however, he later informed that those involved were attending the ceremony.

Terrance Hansen lives just down the street from where this incident took place.

“I didn't hear anything. When my kids came home from work, they said there was a fight and they saw someone bloody,” Hansen said.

Hansen said he later learned how serious the incident was.

“A lot of people are going to be really scared for a few weeks and then they'll probably calm down a little bit,” Hansen said.

Having lived in the area for five years, Hansen says this incident is tragic.

“I don’t think we have anything like that here at all.” Hansen said.

Authorities added that this was an isolated incident with no danger to the community.

Police have not yet released the names of the victim or suspects.
