Investigators were on scene at the BP gas station, searching a four-door Nissan Altima parked at one of the gas pumps. The two right side doors looked like they had been shot a dozen times and the rear windshield was shattered.

More than a dozen evidence markers were on the ground near the vehicle. Traffic leading to the intersection of 60th and Oklahoma was diverted for several hours to nearby residential streets.

Ruth Sanchez, 39, was playing video games in her apartment across the street from the gas station when she heard gunshots.

“I told my daughter, 'Get down. They're shooting,'” she said.

When she looked out the window, she saw two men wearing black masks running from the scene.

Surveillance footage from a nearby residence shows three youths fleeing the scene. One person carried a long gun, another appeared to be holding a handgun, the video shows.

Ms. Sanchez said she later came out of her apartment and also saw injured people inside the vehicle. Among the injured, it appears that there are two young girls.

“I see the little babies on the ground,” Sanchez said. “It’s something we can’t forget. »

“I go to this gas station all the time to buy juice, food for my kids, whatever,” Sanchez continued. “I never imagined something like this would happen here.”

Tracy Fronczak was cleaning her apartment next door to Sanchez, tidying up in preparation for a friend who was bringing a new bike for her 9-year-old son.

Around 2:30 p.m., she heard a “rumbling” between the two buildings.

“It resonated,” she said. “It was loud. It sounded like someone was moving dumpsters.”

Fronczak later learned that these were shots fired in rapid succession, just a few meters away.

“He (her son) could have been out there, riding his bike at the same time it happened,” she said. “All of it. It's so scary to think about.”
