The 39-year-old La Crosse man is accused of fatally stabbing his wife more than 50 times in their La Crosse home this month.

On Wednesday, Judge Scott Horne ruled that Fritz was not qualified for a public defender. He will have two additional weeks to find a lawyer.

Fritz, whose bail was set at $1 million last week, appeared in court via video from the county jail. It's been a little over a week since his wife Ellen died at the family home.

His next court hearing is set for July 2.

Fritz was arrested for assault in 2009, in a domestic violence case in La Crosse County. He was found not guilty on three counts of mental illness or deficiency.
