38 people charged in Volusia County drug bust

The Volusia Sheriff's Office is touting the dismantling of a major drug trafficking ring, according to a news release issued Thursday. 38 suspects face charges in what the VSO calls “Operation Wild 'N' Out,” with most of them having already been arrested.

The operation was extensive, with the organization accused of selling drugs in Daytona Beach, Port Orange, New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater, Oak Hill and Deltona. Ponoma Park, a town in Putnam County, was also allegedly a business site for the drug ring. They allegedly transported fentanyl, heroin and methamphetamine.

The VSO said it seized more than a kilogram of fentanyl, more than 19 pounds of methamphetamine, 69 grams of cocaine and some of the equipment needed to manufacture and package the drugs before they were sold in the community. One particular raid, conducted on Essex Road in Daytona, resulted in the discovery of 75 grams of fentanyl in a baby diaper.

“It takes a team effort to bring down a drug trafficking organization like this, and that’s exactly what we did in this investigation,” said Sheriff Mike Chitwood in the VSO press release. “Today we imprisoned a group of drug traffickers and dramatically reduced the supply of fentanyl, heroin and methamphetamine to our community. But we know that our work is never finished and that we must start again tomorrow.

The lead teams in the investigation were the Volusia Bureau of Investigation and the East Volusia Narcotics Task Force, according to the VSO. The agencies involved that worked on the case were:

  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
  • Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
  • Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE)
  • Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI)
  • Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF)
  • Central Florida High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (CF HITDA)
  • DeLand Counter-Narcotics Team
  • West Volusia Narcotics Task Force
  • VSO SWAT Team
  • FDLE SWAT Team

“We thank our law enforcement partners for taking down this massive drug trafficking ring in Volusia County and removing this deadly poison from our streets.” Florida State Attorney Ashley Moody said of the sting. “Now our statewide prosecutors will ensure these 38 drug dealers are held accountable for their crimes. »

“Disrupting drug trafficking organizations is a critical part of the FBI’s mission, and we are proud to work alongside our federal, state and local partners to make Florida a safer place” added Kristin Rehler, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Jacksonville Field Office – Daytona Beach Resident Agency. “The FBI and our partners will continue to use every legal means available to rid our communities of dangerous drug distributors and the wanton destruction their activities create. »
