3-year-old boy, man injured in drive-by shooting outside Durham pharmacy

DURHAM, North Carolina — A man and a 3-year-old boy were shot and killed Monday outside a pharmacy in Durham.

According to the Durham Police Department, the shooting happened outside a Walgreens in the 700 block of Fayetteville Street.

Police said the man and the 3-year-old child were in a car in the parking lot when a suspect drove through the Walgreens parking lot and shot at the vehicle.

Several police officers were seen Monday afternoon in front of the Walgreens.

Paramedics took both victims to hospital. The 3-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries, while the adult suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the 3-year-old was seriously injured. There were at least 13 evidence markers on the ground at the scene, and a customer at the store reported hearing several gunshots.

The relationship between the man and child is currently unknown.

Mark Anthony Middleton, acting mayor of Durham who is in Washington, D.C. with Mayor Leonardo Williams for a Juneteenth celebration at the White House, provided WRAL News with the following statement on the shooting:

“I am sickened by the regularity of shootings in our city and angered by those who prevent us from using all the tools to fight this scourge. The heart of our city beats for this injured baby tonight and the mayor and I will not stop not to provide all the tools and a strategy consistent with our values ​​to fight against this cancer which is eating away at our city.

Williams also provided WRAL News with a statement:

“As mayor of one of the coolest cities in America, with the best places to live, the best business establishments, etc., none of that matters until we have makes the safety of our communities, especially our children, the number one priority in this city. It won't happen until we treat our children with the same outrage that we have towards safety on the streets, the. tree cutting and ceasefires in the Middle East It starts with community members demanding accountability from themselves and all their government agencies.
