3 weapons seized during traffic stops in Naperville: police

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Naperville police seized firearms during two separate traffic stops in the city Thursday. Both arrests took place shortly after 8 p.m.

Trensae Ware, 24, of the 1500 block of W. Jefferson, was charged with reckless discharge of a weapon and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon in connection with the first incident. Tony Thompson, 19, of Joliet, was charged with possession of a machine gun, possession of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the second incident.

In the first incident, police said she was driving behind Ware when she heard what sounded like a gunshot coming from her car. Officers then arrested Ware and said they found an open tequila bottle and a spent shell casing.

Police say a bullet hole was found near the floor of the vehicle on the driver's side. Ware is accused of having gunshot residue on his hand, as well as a .45 caliber handgun under the passenger seat, as well as a 9mm handgun in the rear passenger seat area.

During another traffic stop, the car Thompson was in was stopped June 6 after police said she “approached the officers' vehicle” as it was leaving a parking lot. They report the car also had expired license plates.

Police said they heard something that sounded like a handgun rack sliding while she was talking to the driver of the car. Thompson, who was in the passenger seat, was asked to get out of the car and police said they found a 9mm Glock 17 under his seat. Police say the weapon was equipped with a switch to make it fully automatic.

“I commend the Naperville Police Department for their efforts in these two cases,” said DuPage County Prosecutor Robert Berlin. “Their commitment to public safety is second to none. Once again, their efforts have helped take dangerous weapons away from those who are not legally allowed to possess them. »

Ware and Thompson are due in court July 1.
