3 killed in Rancho Cordova shooting identified. Man shot his parents, then was shot by SWAT deputies

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office on Friday identified three family members who died Thursday in Rancho Cordova after a man fatally shot his elderly parents and then was shot by officers after a standoff.

A woman called dispatchers around 1:15 a.m. Thursday screaming that she had been shot in the 3300 block of Hartselle Waysheriff’s officials said.

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies and Rancho Cordova police officers arrived at the home and found the woman, identified as Marylou Konvalin, 69 years old, shot and lying in front of the front door. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.

His son, Thomas Konvalin, 38, stood in the doorway and refused to leave, sparking a three-hour standoff as he failed to speak with negotiators, according to a news release released Friday by the sheriff's office.

Deputies believed the second a victim was inside the home and called for additional help. Multiple Sacramento County Sheriff's units, including critical incident negotiators and K-9s, arrived on scene.

Around 4:15 a.m., sheriff's deputies approached the home with a Rook armored vehicle. Konvalin left the house through a back window, holding a rifle, when two SWAT officers shot him three times, according to the news release. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Konvalin's father, William Konvalin, 72, was found in the home and pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing. The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, the release said.

Sheriff's Office homicide detectives will conduct an investigation to determine whether the officers who shot and killed the shooter complied with department policy. The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office will also investigate the incident, which is standard practice.
