3 arrested in Guthrie for abandoning 30 cats, local organization asks for help

The Logan County Sheriff's Office arrested three people accused of dumping more than 30 cats on the side of the road in Guthrie.

These cats are now in the care of a sterilization group.

A Logan County sheriff's deputy discovered the family of cats Monday evening near Industrial Road, still in their kennel.

The owner of Helping Community Paws and Claws says the kittens need the community's help. “We can't do this. There are other options,” Lisa New said.

She now takes care of abandoned cats. “I don’t accept surrenders, we’re not a shelter, what am I going to do with 30 cats?” she says.

New's organization spays and neuters animals in Logan County free of charge to help control the rampant cat population. “This mother kitten produced so many pups, then she got pregnant and had more pups in a year,” she said, describing how the litter of 30 was born.

The growing family outgrew the people caring for the cats, according to Maj. Greg Randolph of the Logan County Sheriff's Office.

“They state that they no longer had the means to care for the cats and that they believed that what they were doing was the right thing to do for them to care for them,” said the Major Greg Randolph of the Logan County Sheriff's Office. .

Brook, Jason and Keegan Wanzer were arrested Tuesday for dumping and mistreating the cats, which carries a felony charge.

Randolph says there are better options to consider, like HCPC services. “That’s why I’m heartbroken because I work so hard to prevent this and then I’m the one who cleans up the mess,” New said.

New wants this to be a wake-up call to pet owners and those who care for stray animals.

“I beg you, fix your animals,” she said.

“Helping Community Paws and Claws is looking for people to adopt the cats as well as donations. Here are the links to donate:
