3 arrested for criminal littering in Pierson | WNDB

Three men were arrested last week by the Volusia Sheriff's Office for dumping 860 pounds of trash in Pierson, according to a VSO report. The dumping occurred near the entrance to the Lake George Wildlife Management Area.

The VSO team went to the dump site and cleared trash from the road with neighborhood residents when they discovered the piece of evidence that led them to their suspects: a receipt among the trash from Winn-Dixie. There, two cans of Bumble Bee tuna and two jugs of spring water had been purchased.

Officers took the receipt to the Winn-Dixie store in question and were able to work with the store to identify three men suspected of disposing of the trash. After finding them, the police were apparently able to obtain a confession.

The men reportedly told deputies they had recently completed an insulation job and one of them came up with the idea of leaving the waste on a side road to avoid having to take it to the landfill. He reportedly said he knew it was a bad idea, but thought it would be more practical.

The three suspects arrested by the VSO are James Dunne, 51, Connor Dunne, 21, and Kyle Hayes, 24. All three were charged with littering more than 500 pounds, a felony. Hayes has previous arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol and burglary.
