2nd vigil planned in Akron after Sunday shooting

SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) – A second vigil is planned for Thursday evening following Sunday's mass shooting in Akron, in which 27 people were shot and one man died from his injuries.

Thursday's vigil will be held at 6 p.m. at Burning Bush Church at 131 S. High St. in Akron.

The victims were shot during a large birthday party shortly after midnight on Sunday, June 2, in the area of ​​Kelly and 8th Avenue.

Akron police said shots were fired from a car and a partygoer returned fire. A total of five weapons and 45 shell casings were recovered from the crime scene.

Police say they are combing through surveillance video, but there is no description of the suspect(s) or vehicle.

Lateris Cook, of Akron, died from his injuries. According to Akron Mayor Shammas Malik, Cook was a “beloved father, son and friend.”

As of Wednesday, a 29-year-old man and a 37-year-old man remained in critical condition in local hospitals. Their names have not been released.

The youngest victim was 19 years old.
