29th Street Bridge Over I-83 Near Harrisburg Will Be Closed For More Than A Year

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is reminding drivers that the 29th Street Bridge, which crosses Interstate 83 near Harrisburg, is scheduled to close for replacement starting Monday, July 8.

Weather permitting, the bridge will close Monday evening and will not reopen until Nov. 12, 2025, according to a news release.

Detours will be in place for trucks, cars and pedestrians during the closure. Cars will be redirected to Derry Street, 19th Street and Paxton Street while trucks will use Derry Street, Eisenhower Boulevard and Paxton Street, PennDOT said.

The pedestrian detour will be in place along Derry Street, South Paxtang Avenue/City Park Drive, Parkview Lane, 32nd Street and Sycamore Street.

Detours for trucks, cars and pedestrians will be in place during this long-term closure.

Work on the bridge is expected to begin the night of July 14, when contractors will remove the bridge girders and deck near the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks. Nighttime lane closures will be in effect in both directions of I-83 near 29th Street for two to three weeks.

New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company, Inc., of New Enterprise, Pennsylvania, is the contractor for the $154 million project, which is part of the larger I-83 Beltline project. All work is expected to be completed by October 12, 2027.
