23-year-old man killed in crash on I-10 Saturday identified

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The 23-year-old man who the Florida Highway Patrol says stopped to help a crashed vehicle but was struck by a driver during a hit-and-run has been identified.

Gavin Carter's family said News from the First Coast that he was the second person killed early Saturday morning.

According to the FHP report, troopers were dispatched to the first crash at 2:06 a.m., near mile marker 360 on I-10. A 31-year-old man was driving an SUV traveling eastbound on I-10 west of McDuff Avenue. The victim failed to maintain his lane, according to the report, and then rolled over and struck the wall. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police called Carter a “good Samaritan” who stopped to help, leaving his vehicle.

He was struck by a sedan and killed, according to the FHP. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

FHP said the driver of the sedan collided with the concrete barrier on the right shoulder of I-10 and the driver fled on foot.

The agency has not released further descriptions of suspects or vehicles.
