21 new officers graduate from Broome Sheriff's Office Correctional Academy

DICKINSON (WBNG) — The Broome County Sheriff's Office had 21 members graduate from its correctional academy Friday.

The sheriff's office noted that Friday marked the end of nearly three months of what it described as grueling training that includes learning defensive tactics, studying law and much more.

Two of the graduates will serve as members of the Tioga County Sheriff's Office, two others will become members of the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office and the remaining 17 will serve Broome County in the correctional facility.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office's new hires will begin their duties June 17 and will help fill staffing needs created by retirements and other retirements.

Commenting on their graduation, Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar said:

“Congratulations to these exceptional men and women on their graduation today, and to Correctional Academy Director Shawn Nalepa for all he has done to prepare them. Our graduates represent a continuation of our ongoing commitment to excellence within the Broome County Division of Corrections and our commitment to the safety and well-being of our incarcerated people, as well as those in their care. Our graduates will also serve as a welcome support and relief to our hard-working men and women currently serving in the Corrections Division.

“I went to law enforcement school, I actually had Undersheriff Davis as an instructor and here I am now,” said Ahmed Abdallah, a 2024 Correctional Academy graduate. Academy was a privilege to experience. I'm glad I got to be a part of it, and if I could do it again, I would.

Members of the Broome County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division oversee the Broome County Correctional Facility through a variety of specialized roles, including investigations, classifications, field training and instruction, Sheriff's Emergency Response Team and more.
