2022 Seminole High School shooting suspect sentenced to 15 years in prison

SEMINOLE COUNTY, FLORIDA — A man arrested at age 16 in 2022 on charges of shooting a classmate at Seminole High School was sentenced Monday to 15 years in prison, court records show.

Da'raveius Smith, now 18, pleaded no contest to charges of attempted first-degree murder, discharging a weapon on school property and shooting into a building or vehicle.

A judge sentenced Smith to 15 years in prison with 895 days credit for time served, followed by five years of probation.

The victim — Jhavon McIntyre, a high school football cornerback who was 18 at the time of the Jan. 19, 2022, shooting — was hospitalized after Smith shot him three times inside a school building.

Sanford police say the shooting happened after an argument over a deceased family member. An arrest report says Smith claimed McIntyre confronted him about the family member and taunted him during class changes, though authorities said in an email to News 6 that it “does not appear to be a case of bullying.”

In sentencing Smith, the state waived the mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years for discharging a firearm and causing great bodily harm.

During Smith's probation, he will be fitted with a GPS monitoring system, will not be allowed to use or possess firearms or other weapons, will have no contact with McIntyre or his family, will not be allowed to return to several addresses, including the school, and will be required to complete several classes related to mental health assessment, anger management and life skills, according to his plea agreement.
