20 Chiefs Rally Shooting Victims Receive Money

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — FOX4 is following up on an investigation into money being raised for victims of the shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl rally.

The KC Strong Fund has mobilized its resources to help those affected, and people have donated over $2 million. But so far, nothing has been done with that money.

“This is a great day, the journey has been difficult and bittersweet in many ways, as we know our community is still healing from what happened on February 14,” said Kera Mashek , director of communications for the United Way of Greater Kansas City.

“Kansas City, we are grateful that you are a generous community, you have been there and present from the beginning,” Mashek said.

During the giving period, more than 4,000 individuals and organizations contributed, raising more than $2 million. As of Thursday, 20 victims received more than $1.2 million from the fund, with payments ranging from $22,000 to $100,000 each.

Along with that, 14 separate groups, including AdHoc Group Against Crime, the Boys and Girls Club and KC Mothers in Charge, received payments of nearly $60,000.

“I know it's been a process to get to where we are today, but it's something we had to do absolutely right to be accountable for the amount of money that's been raised,” Mashek said.

United Way told FOX4 that 100 percent of the money raised went toward rallying victims of the shooting and selected groups.
