2 teens killed after jet ski collides with boat on Illinois lake

Two teenagers were killed after their jet ski crashed into a boat on an Illinois lake.

On Tuesday, June 18, the teens, ages 13 and 16, were riding a jet ski when it crashed into a Sea Ray boat with four people on board on Lake Marie near Antioch, Illinois, according to a message posted on social media by the Lake County Sheriff's Office. The Lake County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit and Patrol Division along with the Antioch Fire Protection District responded to the scene around 5:15 p.m. local time.

“They were traveling north near the channel to Grass Lake, just north of the Elime Road peninsula. At the same time, a Sea Ray Cabin Cruiser, operated by a 55-year-old man from Antioch, was traveling west in the same area, approaching the Gass Lake channel,” the post reads.

Lake County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli confirmed that the 16-year-old was from Lake Forest, California, and the 13-year-old was from Long Grove. The preliminary investigation revealed that the 16-year-old was operating the jet ski and the 13-year-old was the passenger.

Representatives for the Lake County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

According to the publication, the Lake County Sheriff's Office said both girls were wearing life jackets before they were knocked unconscious and thrown into the water upon impact.

After first aid was administered and 911 was called, both teens were transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center where they were both pronounced dead shortly after arrival, the sheriff's office said.

The accident is currently under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit and the Illinois Conservation Police. The Lake County Coroner's Office has scheduled an autopsy for June 20, according to the sheriff's office.
