2 teenage swimmers disappear in waters off Jacob Riis Park in New York: cops

Two teenagers at the beach with their parents disappeared while swimming in the waters of Jacob Riis Park in Queens Friday evening, police said.

FDNY and NYPD divers spent the last two hours of sunlight searching for the teens, who disappeared shortly after rescuers left, authorities said.

The boys, ages 16 and 17, dove into the ocean at Bay 2 of Jacob Riis Park while their parents remained on land, according to the New York Police Department.

But they never returned from their swim and 911 calls reporting their disappearance were made around 6:35 p.m., police said.

It is unclear whether the boys are related, but sources said the two men did not have the same last name.

The NYPD's Special Air Operations Unit, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard, were also searching for the duo.

After a few hours, the FDNY pulled its divers from the water and continued the search with fireboats.

Back on the beach, a handcuffed man was taken away by cops, photos show. It is not clear why he was arrested.

Swimming hours under the supervision of a lifeguard on the federal beach are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
