2 suspects arrested after 2 police-involved shootings in Nebraska

OMAHA, Neb. (KCAU) — Two suspects were arrested early Friday morning after two police-involved shootings and a standoff in Nebraska.

Jason Davenport, 42, of Council Bluffs, and Dana Banks, 40, were arrested the morning of May 31, according to the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP). Both are awaiting indictment.

Davenport was the subject of an active arrest warrant for a separate case and authorities believed he was at a residence in Omaha. When they arrived Thursday around 8:15 p.m., Banks said he was indeed inside.

When Davenport allegedly refused to leave, other NSP officers and Omaha police arrived. Then, around 8:56 p.m., Davenport walked from the rear of the residence and “fired at least two shots from a handgun,” according to a news release. He then jumped a fence and ran towards an empty NSP cruiser.

Davenport allegedly attempted to steal the vehicle and a rifle from the vehicle while officers shot at him. However, he was unable to do so due to the security systems in place.

Banks then drove to the patrol vehicle in a gray Ford Fusion, the release states. She then got out and Davenport took the driver's seat while she “voluntarily entered the passenger side.” Davenport allegedly fled and officers lost him while attempting to pursue the Ford.

After an extensive investigation, Davenport and Banks were eventually found in another car – a Kia Soul – in Washington County, Nebraska, after 3 a.m. Friday. A Washington County sheriff's deputy attempted to stop the car, but the driver allegedly fled, leading to a short chase.

Then, Davenport and Banks got out of the vehicle and fled on foot, according to the release. They hid in a semi-cabin at a department store as “numerous law enforcement partners arrived on scene, including the NSP SWAT team.”

Troopers ordered both men out of the semi and ordered Davenport to drop a gun he was carrying, according to NSP. Instead, he allegedly showed the gun to the police, who then opened fire.

Right after the shots were fired, Banks came out and surrendered. She was taken into custody and transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. However, Davenport still did not want to leave the semi, the release states.

Officers deployed an armored vehicle to “access” the semi-cabin. Then, around 8 a.m., a police dog was deployed to the semi. Davenport was then taken into custody and transported to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No police officers were injured by gunfire. All soldiers who fired their weapons were placed on leave in accordance with NSP policy.

Investigations into the incidents are ongoing. The Omaha Police Department will continue to investigate the first shooting in Omaha, while the NSP Special Investigations Team will continue its investigation into the second shooting in Washington County.
