2 people stabbed by masked men outside Long Island graduation

An adult and a student were allegedly mutilated Wednesday outside the Hofstra University sports complex on Long Island, following a graduation ceremony for Academy charter high schools.

The attack was carried out in Hempstead shortly after 4 p.m. by five men wearing masks, school officials said in a statement provided to News12 Long Island.

The adult victim, injured in the leg, appeared to be the intended target. The student victim reportedly intervened to stop the attack and was hit in the ear. The adult was a guest of this student for graduation, although their exact relationship is unclear.

Academy Charter High Schools said they believe the violence was related to a domestic dispute.

They also “emphasize[d] “this incident took place outside the graduation hall” after the ceremony, and said all attendees passed through metal detectors upon entering the building.

The two victims, whose identities have not been released, were taken to hospital. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

It's unclear if police have any suspects.

Neither Nassau County officials nor Academy Charter School representatives could immediately be reached for comment on the Juneteenth holiday.
