2 people hospitalized after altercation escalates into gunfire outside Walgreens in Old Colorado City | Crime and justice

A fight between two people escalated into gunfire outside a business in Old Colorado City on Sunday, leaving both of them hospitalized with gunshot wounds, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

The initial emergency call indicated there was an active shooter at the Walgreens at 3143 W. Colorado Ave., police spokesman Ira Cronin said. Multiple agencies rushed to the scene, including Colorado Springs Police and Fire, Manitou Springs Police, Colorado State Patrol and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. A tactical team was also called in in case a shooter was barricaded inside the business, Cronin said.

Officers found a person suffering from a gunshot wound outside the store. When police entered the Walgreens, they found a person taking shelter inside.

“At this point, we are calling this individual a witness,” Cronin said.

Investigators learned that a second injured person had left the scene and arrived at the hospital in their personal vehicle, officials said.

A preliminary investigation determined that two people got into an altercation outside the store, during which several shots were fired, several of which hit the building, Cronin said.

The two people, whose injuries are not life-threatening, are currently being questioned by police. But no arrests have been announced and their names have not been released.
