2 people arrested after stolen car spotted in Sturgis

STURGIS – Two people were arrested June 23 on charges related to a stolen car chase in Sturgis.

The Sturgis Department of Public Safety said Tuesday that officers were alerted Sunday morning to a reported stolen vehicle located in Sturgis after a license plate scanner camera detected the number and identified as a car taken from Kendallville, Indiana. Sturgis officers located the vehicle in the area of Fawn River Road and South Lakeview Avenue and attempted to stop the driver. The vehicle took off and drove through residential areas before finally stopping. The driver and a passenger fled the vehicle on foot.

The female passenger was quickly taken into custody, while the driver could not initially be located by Sturgis officers and St. Joseph County deputies. A Michigan State Police K-9 unit was called and the driver was found hiding in the backyard of a nearby home.

The driver, 18, was arrested for “numerous offenses” stemming from Sunday's incident, as well as a number of outstanding warrants for his arrest. The 33-year-old passenger was arrested on suspicion of obstruction of justice and drug-related charges. Both were held without bail at the St. Joseph County Jail, awaiting arraignment.

Local police departments generally do not release the names of people arrested until after arraignment and charges are confirmed.

The Sturgis Department of Public Safety was assisted by the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police. The department expressed gratitude to “the many community members who live in the neighborhoods near this incident.” They were diligent in assisting the police.”
