2 people accused of stabbing at Salt Lake convenience store

SALT LAKE CITY — Two Sandy men are facing criminal charges in connection with a stabbing at a downtown gas station, including a man who police say helped frame the victim.

Mark Hunter Sorensen, 29, and Kurt Carrington Warner, 34, were each charged Friday in 3rd District Court with aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, a second-degree felony.

On May 12, Salt Lake police responded shortly before 10 p.m. to a report of a stabbing at a Maverik, 615 S. 200 West. The victim was transported in serious condition to a local hospital to be treated for stab wounds to the chest, according to police.

When detectives interviewed the victim, he said Sorensen had picked him up from a motel so they could meet a woman at a store. But as soon as Sorensen parked in front of the gas station, Warner “began banging on the passenger window,” then opened the passenger door and stabbed him multiple times, according to charging documents.

“(The victim) stated that Warner got into the vehicle and continued to stab him. (He) stated that he got out of the vehicle, at which point Warner followed him and continued to stab him again.” , according to the charges.

The victim also told police “he thought he was being set up by Sorensen and Warner because he owed money,” according to the charges.

After the attack, Warner is recorded on surveillance video getting into the vehicle that Sorensen had driven to the Maverik, according to police.

“Sorensen is never seen exiting the vehicle or assisting (the victim) in any way,” the charges state.
