2 men charged in deadly 2021 Halloween party shooting

ALBUQUERQUE, NM — The Albuquerque Police Department arrested Ray Torres, 28, in connection with a 2021 Halloween party that turned deadly.

Investigators said the shooting happened during a large party at a southeast Albuquerque apartment complex.

A witness video allegedly showed the victim, Lorenzo Romero, speaking with an individual in the passenger side of a Jeep. Gunshots can be heard from the Jeep and Romero falls to the ground.

Witnesses said they took Romero to the hospital and one of the witnesses was allegedly run over by the Jeep. Police say several additional shots were fired and another person was also hit.

Romero died in hospital.

Detectives later determined Torres was driving the Jeep when the shooting occurred. A handgun belonging to Torres was turned over to police and it was determined to be the murder weapon.

Police say Alexavier Gutierrez, 26, is also charged in the killing. Detectives recently interviewed Gutierrez, who admitted to firing the gun. He said several people were armed and he thought he was going to be shot. He said he didn't know if he hit anyone or not.
