2 men accused of shooting family of 5 on I-240 appear in court

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Two men accused of shooting at a family of five on I-240 appeared before a judge Thursday morning.

Lorenzo Watson and Kendrick Ray face multiple criminal charges – both have bonds set at $1 million.

Ray was able to retain a lawyer, but Watson was not. We spoke with Ray's attorney, who says there's still a lot of evidence to review and understand.

Both are accused of being involved in Tuesday's shooting involving a father and four of his children on I-240.

As of June 13, all victims were still recovering.

Both Ray and Watson face criminal charges, including six counts of attempted first-degree murder. Ray pleads not guilty.

“There are allegations that several people are at large and Mr. Ray is currently under arrest. But ultimately the case will have to determine who is really responsible for this shooting,” said Brandon Hall, Kendrick Ray’s attorney.

“If you're just a passenger, that doesn't mean you're guilty of committing a crime,” Hall added, “all of this evidence will have to be revealed in the coming days.”

According to Hall, Ray's only previous case involved the now-defunct Scorpion Unit, where he [claims] he was assaulted by officers in that unit, so that case was ultimately dismissed,” Hall said.

Hall also said that at this time it is still unclear who fired the shots, adding that his client is innocent until proven guilty.

“It’s very scary [when] you hear the judge throwing huge numbers at you. Mr. Ray still has his constitutional right to be defended,” he stressed.

When Ray was arrested, he had an outstanding warrant for carjacking, reckless endangerment and attempted first-degree murder.

Ray moved his bail review for tomorrow. Because Watson doesn't have a lawyer, the judge says he will give him until tomorrow to find one. Watson's bail review is also scheduled for tomorrow.
