2 in 5 children injured in two overnight fires on Chicago's South Side

CHICAGO (CBS) — Two children are among five people injured after two nighttime fires in the south of the city, according to firefighters.

The fires occurred in the South Shore and Bridgeport neighborhoods, about an hour apart.

One of the fires occurred around 3 a.m. in the 2400 block of East 78th Street on the South Shore.

Two children and one adult were taken to hospital in critical condition. Another adult was taken to hospital in fair condition.

About an hour earlier, crews were battling another fire in the 3100 block of South Green Street in Bridgeport around 2 a.m. Firefighters were seen attacking the flames from the roof and ground.

Firefighters said one person was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

It is not clear the age and gender of each of the victims.

The circumstances surrounding both fires remain under investigation.
