2 dead in shooting during Juneteenth celebrations in Texas, police say

The shooting began Saturday evening in Round Rock, Texas, police said.

Two people were shot and killed during a Juneteenth celebration Saturday at a park in Round Rock, Texas, police said.

A fight broke out between two groups at Old Settlers Park around 11 p.m., Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks told reporters early Sunday. Around the same time, someone pulled out a gun and started shooting, Banks said, adding that several people were struck by gunfire.

Two people died at the scene, Banks said. The dead do not appear to have participated in the broader altercation and it is unclear how many shooters there were, he said.

The Juneteenth festival, organized by a local nonprofit and the city government, included a free concert with a series of acts Saturday evening.

The shooting happened near the vendor area of the concert stage, Banks said.

At least six people were taken to hospitals with “potentially serious” injuries, emergency officials said.

Four adults and two children were transported to local trauma centers, Austin-Travis County EMS said.
