2 bodies found during search for missing father and 12-year-old son in Scotland

Two bodies have been found in the Scottish Highlands amid the search for a missing father and son from Cheshire, UK.

Tom Parry, 49, and his son Richie, 12, were due to return home on Wednesday, May 29, after their hike in Glen Nevis and Glen Coe, according to media reports including The Guardianthe BBC and STV News reported.

Police Scotland have since confirmed in a statement that two bodies had been found on the evening of May 29, but noted that a formal identification had not yet taken place.

Police also said the family of the missing father and son were “informed” of the update during the search.

“Investigations are ongoing but there are no apparent suspicious circumstances,” the statement added. “A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course.”

Inspector Craig Johnstone said: “Our thoughts are with everyone involved. I would like to thank all the emergency services and mountain rescue volunteers.

According to the BBC, the Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team said Parry and his son were experienced hikers.

Police Scotland said they had no further information to add when contacted by PEOPLE, and the Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team did not immediately respond when PEOPLE requested comment.

Parry and his son Richie are from Alsager, Cheshire, and traveled to the Scottish Highlands on Tuesday May 28. Their car was found in the Three Sisters parking lot in Glencoe, according to The Guardian.

The disappearance of the two men occurred amid thunderstorms in the Glencoe area, the media outlet said. The stunning views attract thousands of tourists every year.

According to a Facebook post shared by AFC Alsager, Richie recently joined one of their new under-13 football teams. Parry is believed to work as a market researcher, the BBC reported.

St. Mary Magdalene Church, located in the couple's hometown of Alsager, shared a statement on Facebook after learning that two bodies had been found.

“St. Mary's Church will continue to be open, as it is every day, to all who wish to come in and peacefully hold Tom, Richie and their entire family in their thoughts and prayers,” their message reads .
