2 alleged gang members charged in 2021 death of National Guardsman

CHICAGO — Two men have been charged with federal racketeering in connection with the 2021 killing of a 19-year-old soldier on the city's northwest side.

Prosecutors allege that Gary Roberson, 40, and Joseph Matos, 41, murdered National Guardsman Chrys Carvajal on July 3 to maintain and increase their positions in a Milwaukee Kings street gang.

Officers arrested Roberson in May. He remains detained after pleading not guilty to the charges against him. Matos remains a fugitive.

Carvajal was visiting family when he was fatally shot at Belmont Cragin. His family told WGN News he was attending a party near Beldin and Lockwood and was walking to his car when someone drove by and opened fire.

Murder in aid of racketeering carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
