2 adults killed, 2 teens flee after another teen driver falls asleep at the wheel

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (KCTV) – Two people died in a crash on U.S. Highway 50 in Warrensburg after a teenage driver of another vehicle fell asleep at the wheel.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 1 p.m. Monday on NW US Highway 50 at US-50 BUS.

MSHP reported that a 16-year-old from Warrensburg was driving alone in a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado when he fell asleep and drove off the right side of US Hwy 50. He returned to the roadway and crossed the BUS US-50, going airborne and hitting another car, a 2022 Acura RDX.

The Acura was stopped at the intersection, but was pushed off the side of the road with the Chevrolet, striking a road sign.

The driver of the Acura, Derek B. Moffett, 55, of Erie, Colorado, and a passenger, Patricia L. Moffett, 83, of Overland Park, Kansas, were pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner of Johnson County. . The other two passengers, women ages 16 and 19, were seriously injured and airlifted to Research Medical Center.

The MSHP report states that all four occupants of the Acura were wearing seat belts.

The 16-year-old driver of the Chevrolet was not wearing a seat belt and suffered only minor injuries. He was taken by private transport to a nearby hospital.
