2 accused of crashing into Stark County sheriff's car, leading chase into Plain Township

PLAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WJW) – Two men are facing charges after investigators say a driver crashed into the Stark County Sheriff's car and led a short chase Tuesday morning.

The crash occurred shortly after 7 a.m. when a Stark County sheriff's deputy was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Middlebranch Avenue and Schneider Street NE in Plain Township , according to a press release from the sheriff's office.

Investigators say the sheriff's cruiser was struck by a 2017 Ford Focus. The driver then got out of the Ford and attempted to flee, but was quickly apprehended, according to the sheriff's office.

The driver, identified as Nickolas Hamilton, 30, of Louisville, was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, driving a safe distance, driving under suspension, failure to stop after an accident and of possession of drug abuse instruments.

Investigators say Hamilton also had several outstanding warrants for his arrest.

A passenger, identified as Robert Pinkerton, 55, of Canton, was arrested on several outstanding warrants. He is also charged with obstructing justice.

The sheriff's deputy and two suspects were treated at local hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries. Hamilton and Pinkerton were then taken to the Stark County Jail.

“Fortunately, the injuries sustained were not life-threatening. I am proud of our team’s quick response in effectively handling the situation,” Stark County Sheriff George Maier said in the press release. “We remain committed to keeping our roads safe and this case is a crucial example of why our work is so important. »
