19-year-old USC student arrested after fatally stabbing homeless man on Greek Row

Ivan Gallegos, a 19-year-old student at the University of Southern California (USC), was arrested on suspicion of murder following the fatal shooting of a homeless man in the Greek neighborhood of the 'university.

The incident occurred after the victim allegedly broke into vehicles at the scene.

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon involving a knife around 8:15 p.m. Monday in the 700 block of West 28th Street. According to a statement from the LAPD, “the male victim was breaking into vehicles at the scene when the suspect confronted her and stabbed her. »

Acting LAPD Chief Dominic Choi explained the situation, saying Gallegos saw the homeless man break into his car in the back parking lot of the fraternity house. During the confrontation, the man allegedly claimed he had a gun and, perhaps in self-defense, Gallegos had to stab him.

Los Angeles Times said no firearms were recovered at the scene of the murder.

The homeless man, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Who is Ivan Gallegos?

Gallegos, a Los Angeles resident, remained at the scene and was taken into custody without incident. He was identified as the suspect in the stabbing and was jailed on suspicion of murder. Authorities set his bail at $2 million.

Last month, USC's Annenberg Media published a profile of Gallegos, profiling him as an emerging musical artist and student at the Marshall School of Business.

A report from Gallegos stated: “Throughout his childhood, Ivan experienced the reality of both his parents' involvement in gang activity, which led to their intermittent incarceration. »

“Although he grew up in an environment saturated with drugs, gangs and prostitution, he focused on music and honed his skills to become a multi-faceted instrument and singer. »

A woman who manages the Delta Tau Delta fraternity told Eyewitness News that Gallegos is a student at USC and a member of the fraternity. The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said Gallegos was the person arrested in connection with the incident.
