19-year-old man identified as suspect in fatal West Carteret shooting

A 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting of two women in West Carteret Wednesday morning.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office identified the suspect as Gaurav Gill, of Kent, Washington. Photos of Gill were taken by a neighbor on Post Boulevard moments before he was captured by Carteret police Wednesday afternoon.

Gill allegedly shot the two women at 9 a.m. outside a home on Roosevelt Avenue. The victims were found by first responders in the alley.

One of the women, Jasvir Kaur, 29, died from her injuries. A second woman, aged 20, was taken to University Hospital and is in critical condition.

After the shooting, police launched a search that lasted several hours. Heavily armed police and K-9 units were seen in neighborhoods as state police helicopters hovered overhead.

Eventually, the suspect was spotted by a woman who saw Gill in a neighbor's yard. His report to police led to his arrest behind a house on Post Boulevard.

Investigators with the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office have not revealed why Gill is in New Jersey or whether or not these two shooting victims were targeted.

Gill is charged with murder, attempted murder and weapons possession.
