18-year-old Lake Andes man charged with first-degree murder in stabbing case – Mitchell Republic

LAKE ANDES, SD — An 18-year-old Lake Andes man has been arrested in connection with a homicide that occurred in Charles Mix County in May.

According to the Charles Mix County State's Attorney's Office, Mackenzie Antelope was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter for the May 22 death of Quinlan Ream, 22, of Lake Andes.

Antelope was also charged with aggravated assault against Dylan Oullette, 33, of Lake Andes.

The incident happened at the Landing Strip Motel in Lake Andes.

According to court documents, Antelope, Ream and Oullette were all consuming alcohol at the motel on the evening of May 21. According to witnesses, Oullette and Antelope got into a verbal altercation, during which Antelope allegedly grabbed a knife. Antelope warned Oullette that he would “sting” him if he came near. Subsequently, when Oullette appeared to have raised his arms, Antelope stabbed him several times.

The documents further detail that while Antelope was stabbing Oullette, Ream intervened by jumping on Antelope's back. Therefore, Antelope redirected her attack towards Ream, stabbing him as well.

Oullette managed to escape and crossed the street to the Gus Stop gas station, where an employee called 911.

Witness reports of a red car parked outside the motel room directed authorities to the residence of Antelope's grandmother. Although Antelope initially denied being present at the motel during the assault, authorities linked him to the crime scene by matching the pattern of the sandals he wore during the interview with the footprints discovered at the crime scene.

When first questioned by authorities, Oullette initially claimed he passed out drunk and woke up to an unidentified individual stabbing him. However, in a later interview, Oullette identified Antelope as her attacker.

The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, Yankton Sioux Tribal Police and the Charles Mix County Sheriff's Office worked together to apprehend Antelope.

“This case is a great example of collaboration between tribal, state and county governments,” Charles Mix County State’s Attorney Steve Cotton said in a statement released Friday (May 31). “Through this collaborative effort, law enforcement officers from multiple agencies were able to act quickly to protect the public.

Antelope is currently being held in the Charles Mix County Jail on $500,000 bail and will make his first court appearance next week. If convicted, a Class A felony such as first-degree murder is punishable by life in prison and may be punishable by the death penalty.
